Winter Pruning Wrapped Up Just in Time for Spring

As the last day of winter faded into a crisp, golden evening last week, we put the finishing touches on one of the most crucial tasks of the season: primary pruning. The vineyard is officially trimmed and tidied, just in time to welcome the first breath of spring.

Pruning is both an art and a science—an essential step in preparing our vines for a successful growing season. It’s the moment we shape the future of our vineyard, deciding which canes will bear fruit and which will be cut away to make room for fresh, healthy growth. This year, our vineyard manager led the charge, expertly guiding the team, with Keith and Bob, through row after row, ensuring each vine was pruned with care and precision.

Once the final cuts were made, the work wasn’t quite finished. Clearing away the pruned canes is just as important as the pruning itself. Last week our vineyard manager raked up the discarded vines and smoothed out the rows, leaving behind a clean and orderly vineyard ready to awaken with the warmth of spring.

There’s something deeply satisfying about watching the vineyard transition from its winter dormancy to the first stirrings of new life. With the primary pruning complete, we can now look forward to the next steps—bud break, the return of lush greenery, and the promise of another bountiful harvest.

It’s moments like these that remind us how much care and dedication go into every bottle we craft. Cheers to a new season at Faith Hope and Charity Vineyards!
